Connecticut Drug Addiction Treatment

Every person is not the same, so why should every Connecticut addiction & mental health treatment program be the same? Each addiction or mental health crisis arises from various circumstances. All people struggling do not fall into one category. As such, what works for one may not work for another.

In some instances, a long-term, extended addiction or mental health treatment program is required. The decision to enter into extended care as an outpatient is entirely up to individual, their physician, and any recommendations received from the clinical team that evaluated the individual circumstances. A person’s progress in the program will also play a large part in determining if extended care is needed, and if so, for how long. The good thing about an extended outpatient program is that the person will be able to live their life while receiving treatment. They may be able to stay with family and even be employed during their extended treatment.

Just as each program and individual is unique, so too is the extended care received. As an example, some individuals may want or require additional help that extends beyond the perimeters of other Connecticut addiction & mental health treatment plans. This might include extra treatment methods for physical or mental health issues. Some recovering clients may require extended care simply because they do not yet feel ready and armed to return to their previous lives without support. They may choose to stay in the program longer and receive additional support and preparedness before fully re-entering society as a sober individual.

What to Expect During Connecticut Drug Addiction Treatment Extended Care

Once it has been determined a recovering addict requires extended care, they should be prepared ahead of time so they know what to expect. While each individual will likely experience a different extended care treatment program, there are certain elements that can be expected by all who need long-term care.

Individual Therapy Sessions

During individual therapy sessions you will work with a qualified therapist on an individualized basis to help you better understand and implement the treatments and methods you learn while in extended care. These individualized treatment sessions are an integral part of your successful recovery.

Small Group Therapy

During treatment, you will meet on a regular basis in a group to share experiences, goals, and support. A small group provides you with an extra level of support outside of your individual therapist.

Relapse Prevention

You will also receive a specialized course with a specific focus on relapse prevention. As a result of this course, you will discover a connection between your body, mind, and spirit through the 12-step principles that will apply to all aspects of your life and prepare you for a return to your previous life free from addiction.

Other Specific Therapies During Extended Care Treatment

A number of other therapy methods may be applied to an individual. The exact treatment used for each person will vary according to specific needs. Some other methods include:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Addiction

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or CBT, allows a recovering addict to sort through their thoughts in a positive manner. This often allows them to more easily examine what triggers may set off their addiction and identify ways to handle or eliminate those triggers. This type of drug addiction treatment is often given to those who have also developed an Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Motivational Enhancement Theory During an Addiction Treatment Program

Often used in the treatment of drug addicts who have exhibited signs of bipolar disorder or have an eating disorder, Motivational Enhancement Theory, or MET, puts a strong focus on the individual’s personal motivations to rid themselves of the addiction and continue with a clean and sober life. Family therapies, where members of the individual’s family play an important role, are also helpful in the motivation process.

Addiction Twelve-step Program

The 12-step program is perhaps one of the most well-known and recognized treatments for alcohol or drug addiction. This program diligently follows a 12-step process to finally conquer drug or alcohol abuse so the recovering addict can move on into a new, independent and addiction-free life. Each individual who participates in a 12-step program is given a list of the steps to read, meditate on, and follow.
