Types of Addiction Treatment
The type of treatment that will work best for each person is determined after looking at a person’s circumstances. Here are the most common types of addiction treatment:
Long-term or Extended Care Addiction Treatment
A person who has been using inhalants, for example, cannot begin treatment until after he or she has undergone the detoxification process. Because this process is so highly involved, it is recommended that the patient enter a long-term outpatient program.
This treatment can take as long as one year, but it can also be completed in six months. The medical practitioners and the facility’s staff become an integral part of the patient’s socialization.
The program also makes it possible for the patient to spend some time contemplating his or her past behaviors and how they have complicated his or her mental health. They can also begin to think about continuing on with their lives after the addiction has been conquered.
Because of the length of time this type of program takes, an outpatient setting is usually the most beneficial for the client, though some facilities do offer an inpatient extended care option. The outpatient option allows the person to have time in the “real world” outside of addiction treatment – this may also include part-time employment and time with family.
The outpatient treatment program was designed for those who cannot spend a long period of time in an inpatient facility. This program allows the patient to continue with his or her job and family responsibilities while undergoing treatment at our drug addiction rehab in Greenwich CT. A bonus is the fact that this type of treatment is less expensive than an inpatient long-term treatment. Patients will still receive the support they need from the medical and facility personnel, and they will, undoubtedly, move on to an aftercare program when they are finished.
Short-term Treatment
The short-term addiction treatment program is just as intense as the long-term program and may or may not be focused on the 12-step approach. This treatment only requires three to six weeks. Many short-term treatment options take place in an inpatient setting, however, there are also outpatient treatment options available. Many clients find better success in long-term recovery when an extended care treatment is chosen.
Drug Addiction Treatment Counseling
Patients receive counseling from medical professionals in one-on-one therapy and group therapy sessions. Individualized counseling is advantageous for each patient because only one particular patient’s problems are discussed in this type of therapy. Patients are also encouraged to participate in group counseling where they will be able to interact with the group while the counselor acts as the moderator.
Examples of drug addiction treatment therapies are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET). These therapies can be utilized in an outpatient setting as well as inpatient.
CBT helps patients learn to think more positively. In the process, they learn what triggers them to pursue drugs, and they also learn to choose more positive behaviors. MET focuses on the motivations that a patient has to refrain from taking drugs.
